Advice for DoxyPEP

As DoxyPEP is a preventative approach rather than a treatment for established infection, there are no symptoms that directly indicate its need. However, individuals who might benefit from DoxyPEP typically engage in sexual behaviours that increase their risk of STIs.

Many bacterial STIs can be asymptomatic, particularly in their early stages, which is partly why preventative approaches are valuable. When symptoms do occur with bacterial STIs, they may include unusual discharge, genital pain or discomfort, skin rashes, painful urination, sores or lesions on the genitals or mouth, and in the case of syphilis, a painless chancre. The absence of symptoms does not mean absence of infection, which is why regular STI testing remains essential regardless of DoxyPEP use.

DoxyPEP itself doesn't require diagnosis as it's a preventative intervention rather than a treatment for an established condition. However, before considering DoxyPEP, comprehensive STI testing is recommended to establish baseline status. This typically includes tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, and sometimes hepatitis. These tests help ensure that the regimen is being used for prevention rather than inadvertently treating an existing infection suboptimally.

DoxyPEP treatment involves taking a single 200mg dose of treatment within 72 hours after condomless sexual contact. The medication works by preventing bacterial replication, thereby stopping infections before they become established. DoxyPEP should be taken with a full glass of water, and users should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it to prevent oesophageal irritation. It can be taken with or without food, though dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminium, or iron may decrease absorption if taken simultaneously.

DoxyPEP is itself a prevention strategy, but several considerations can maximise its effectiveness while minimising potential downsides. Consistent communication with healthcare providers about sexual practices and DoxyPEP usage helps ensure appropriate implementation. Regular STI testing (typically every 3 months for those with multiple partners) remains essential, as DoxyPEP is not 100% effective against all bacterial STIs and provides no protection against viral infections like HIV, herpes, or hepatitis.

DoxyPEP FAQs (6)

DoxyPEP is a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment that uses an regimen to help prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea. It’s an effective way to reduce your risk of contracting these infections after potential exposure, particularly after unprotected sex.

DoxyPEP works by preventing the bacteria that cause STIs from establishing an infection. When taken after condomless sex, DoxyPEP can reduce the risk of bacterial STIs by up to 60%, as shown in recent studies and trials.

DoxyPEP is effective in reducing the risk of syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia. However, using condoms or other barrier methods remains the most reliable way to protect against STDs and STIs, including HIV.

Recent trials suggest that DoxyPEP is approximately 60% effective at reducing the risk of contracting bacterial STIs, such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea, when taken within 72 hours of exposure.

For maximum effectiveness, it is best to take DoxyPEP within 24 hours after condomless sex. However, it can still be effective if taken within 72 hours. Condomless sex includes oral, anal, or vaginal contact without using a condom, where there’s skin-to-skin contact or fluid exchange.

Take two 200mg tablets within 72 hours of a condomless sexual encounter. It’s recommended to take the dose as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours, for optimal effectiveness. Be sure to take the tablets with 8 oz of water and food to reduce the risk of nausea.

Important:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure while taking this treatment, as it can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight.
